Derrick Knowles lives near Cheney, WA where he writes as much as his job as a full-time, conservationist do-gooder allows. He is co-editor of a collection of nature essays, Holding Common Ground: The Individual and Public Lands in the American West (EWU Press, 2005), and is a regular contributor to Out There Monthly, an outdoor magazine published out of Spokane.

WHY I WRITE: For me, writing is therapy. If I could paint, I might not write. But since I'm a terrible painter, I must keep plugging away, or the voices would grow louder. And I can't let that happen. I've also found that as a recovering college student with undiagnosed Post-Academic Distress Disorder (PADD), writing and long retreats into the natural world are two of the only things that truly make me feel alive and connected with the world beyond the television and computer screens.
