Remains

What’s left are just
questions, which I see
must stay unanswerable. The world needs its secrets

just as two lovers can never fully disclose themselves
to each other: this constant asking to be discovered,

to be found out. The world needs
less death. I see that now. And the body

has too many fears. When you died,
I was even more broken by our history, which then ended.

It’s true I can still see you
with the expert eye of having held you.

The body demands
change.

The only cruelty
in living is living.
