“When I’m feeling stuck and inclined not to write, sometimes nothing but sheer cussed stubbornness keeps me going—rebellion against all the forces lined up against the possibility of making a life as a writer. (Not making a living—I know better than that!—but making a life.) On better days, I’m motivated by gratitude: gratitude towards all the poets and writers who have meant so much to me over the years and with whose work my own is always in conversation, and gratitude towards all the details, the moments that offer themselves up to me demanding my attention and my words.”
