Elsewhere

One day within your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere. – Psalm 84

Maybe today we will live our own
lives for the first time, perhaps after

the heat rises to 105 as a woman who
cooked with a big smile, who served

yet also failed is buried by her friends,
a day we leave unrecorded in our journals

we are so exhausted with this peace,
a day when your court is the curve

of the highway and the hazy twilight behind
us as we go home at last and for good.
