David Susman grew up in Massachusetts and has lived in New York, Maryland, Utah, and Shanghai, China. He currently lives in southern Maine, where he teaches English.

In answer to our question of why he writes, David responded:

“I’m not altogether sure why I write, but I know that it has a lot to do with my life as a reader. At unexpected moments, it will occur to me that I’ve never read a story containing such-and-such—a certain plot, a specific character, even a particular phrase. The world suddenly seems odd and wrong, not having that story in existence, and nothing will be quite right until, skillfully or unskillfully, I write it myself.”
