Kelley E. Shinn is a graduate of the Hollins University Creative Writing program, where she won the Melanie Hook Rice novel award. She has an essay about losing her legs forthcoming in Bayou Magazine. When asked what keeps her moving forward as a writer, she ponders why a Greek soldier, in pursuit of glory, would have poured out countless, vain libations and slaughtered fine cattle only to find favor with drunkard gods who would often determine mortal fates on whimsy and a bet. As it is with the gods on Olympus, so it is with her feisty, manic muse. Dear Muse, she pleads, please relent. I live well. I read often. You must let me sleep more. Soften your rage. The children have been wearing the same socks for three days.
