Stephanie Friedman is the program director of the Writer’s Studio, a continuing education program in creative writing at the University of Chicago. She holds an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago. Her recent publications include a review essay on place and masculinity in recent fiction about Israel, published in the spring 2011 issue of The Reform Jewish Quarterly, and a craft essay on resonance in fiction published on Hunger Mountains website. She also writes a blog titled The Winding Stitch. She lives in Chicago with her partner and their two children.

In answer to our question of why she writes, Stephanie responded:

“In a world filled with noise and distractions disguising themselves as engagement, writing and reading create a space that seems increasingly important to me, a place where thought and feeling come together in constructive ways, where internal contemplation leads to external engagement. They are not just activities, but modes of being, and I couldn’t imagine life without them.”
