Joel James Davis recently won an Andrew Bergman Scholarship in Creative Writing at Binghamton University, where he studies English and globalization. A winner of a 2003 Kenneth Miller Literary Prize, he has fiction forthcoming in Elsewhere and is a reader for Harpur Palate. He lives in upstate New York with his two children, a musician and a jock, and is manager of the alternative band complex 3.

“Writing, for me, is the only true way I know to connect with my past, my childhood. It allows me permission to climb back through yellowing Polaroids to when life was devoid of war and hate. Of course, life back then wasn’t really devoid of these terrible things, but I didn’t know that at the time, and I’m pretty sure it’s my refusal to release my grip on disillusionment that moves me forward as a writer.”
