Sarah J. Sloat grew up in New Jersey and has since lived in China, Kansas, and Italy. For the past 16 years she’s lived in Frankfurt, Germany, where she works as an editor for a news agency. Sarah’s poems have appeared in West Branch, Juked, Yemassee, Front Porch, and Barrelhouse, among other journals. Her website is http://theraininmypurse.blogspot.com.

In answer to our question of why she writes, Sarah responded:

“I have always loved language, but studying and speaking other languages also keeps my appreciation of American English keen. People who speak foreign languages know their own gives them freedom and comfort unlike anything else. Being largely cut off from native speakers, writing helps connect me to my identity and where I’m from—I’m from English.”
