Diane Simmons has published short fiction in Northwest Review, Fiction, Green Mountains Review, Local Knowledge, College Hill Review, Hamilton Stone Review, and Spindle. Her novel, Dreams Like Thunder (Story Line Press, 1995), won the Oregon Book Award for Fiction. She grew up on a small farm in Eastern Oregon; currently she heads the Writing and Literature Degree Program at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York City. In answer to our question of why she writes, Diane responded:

“Why keep writing? Because for a couple of hours a day—and when it’s working—you’re in a magic theater where everything you’ve ever experienced or saw or heard or thought about comes alive. It’s beyond me how people live without that.”
