Diane Seuss’s collection of poems, Wolf Lake, White Gown Blown Open, won the 2009 Juniper Prize for Poetry. It will be published by the University of Massachusetts Press in April 2010. She is Writer-in-Residence at Kalamazoo College in Michigan.

In answer to our question of why she writes, Diane responded:

“I come from a long line of hard-working people—barbers, farmers, nurses and teachers. My people tend to be the ones who live in the trailer park hit by the tornado, who fall off the top of the grain elevator, whose underwear on the clothesline gets invaded by wasps. The same thing that got them up in the morning gets me up in the morning—and by ‘gets me up in the morning’ I mean keeps me writing poems. I’d like to die like the barber, who keeled over while sharpening his straight razor—and by ‘straight razor’ I mean pencil.”
